Mazda’s potent new MPS at Geneva

Two very different flavours of the new Mazda 3 are here on show at Geneva, in the form of the MPS and new i-stop versions.
Something of an underdog, the previous 3 MPS was in fact one of the most powerful hot hatches out there.

The outgoing MPS’s dull styling explains why it was so overlooked, despite the keen pricing and massively powerful 260hp 2.3-litre engine. The good news is the engine stays for the new model but the look is much more exciting and comes complete with a large, Subaru-style bonnet scoop.

Like the 250hp Renaultsport Megane also revealed at the show, the MPS uses a limited-slip differential to put its power down on effectively. On the spec sheet both are eclipsed by the 300hp Focus RS but will the Ford still take the honours when we drive them back to back? We look forward to finding out.

A rather different take on the theme of the new 3 comes in the form of the new i-stop version, part of Mazda’s ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom’ programme. Everyone is at it of course, but the eco version of the new 3 goes against the flow by using a relatively large 2-litre direct injection petrol engine.

Most rival eco models rely on diesel power for low CO2 and decent economy but Mazda reckons the i-stop system improves fuel consumption by 12% alone. It also satisfies forthcoming Euro V emissions regs. Geneva is also another chance to see Mazda’s futuristic Kiyora concept car, current models like the facelifted MX-5 also on show.
