Unveiled: new Merc E-Class at Geneva
It peeped out from behind the covers at the Detroit press day but the all-new E-Class is officially here at Geneva.
And it’s the first time we’ve really had chance to really examine those controversial looks in the flesh.

Dynamic new look
So what’s the verdict? Well Mercedes has certainly tried everything to give the E-Class a distinctive and more dynamic new look. And after the initial shock there’s much to admire in the new model, even if the back end does look rather Lexus like – bizarre given the Japanese firm has traditionally tried to look like Mercedes!
The coupe version of the E-Class is also making its debut here and looks very sleek and appealing. It’s also – according to Mercedes – the most aerodynamic production car in the world and proves you don’t need dumpy Toyota Prius looks to have fuel-saving low-drag bodywork. Mercedes deserves a prize for this alone.
Engines are shared across both variants, the petrol ranges topped with updated versions of the existing 388hp 5.5-litre V8 petrol and a 292hp direct-injection version of the 3.5-litre V6 now badged E350 CGI. There’s also a 204hp E250 CGI V6 petrol, Mercedes model numbers no longer an indication of engine size as they once were.
Moving on, the biggest changes are in the four-cylinder cars, with three variants of the all-new BlueEfficiency diesel engine. The top-spec E250 CDI has 204hp and an amazing 369lb ft of torque and is available in the coupe and saloon. Lower power E220 CDI and E200 CDI versions are also offered on the saloon only.
Start/stop for next E-Class
The saloon also gets an all-new 1.8-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine with 184hp and – inevitably – a new ECOstart/stop system as standard. CO2 is just 159g/km and it’ll do 41.5mpg. At the other end of the scale the E63 AMG has a 525hp normally aspirated 6.2-litre V8, for which Mercedes isn’t broadcasting any mpg figures yet…
Safety technology also features highly, the E-Class and its Coupe derivative introducing plenty of advanced systems to keep you on the straight and narrow. Of these the new Attention Assist is the most interesting, the system monitoring your driving to make sure you’re not nodding off. Clever stuff.
There’s also the optional Adaptive Main Beam Assist that uses a camera to adjust the headlight beam spread according to the position of oncoming vehicles and potentially extending the range of the dipped beam from 65 to 300 metres. Full beam is automatically engaged when the road is clear.
Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist systems are becoming more and more widespread, the Mercedes set up alerting the driver to lane drift by vibrations through the steering wheel. Night vision and sign-reading Speed Limit Assist are also available, Attention Assist drawing on all these systems and combining to offer a formidable armoury of safety technology.
Maybach Zeppelin
Merc’s super exclusive Maybach offshoot is also here on the stand and debuting its latest new version – the Zeppelin. Reviving a name applied to Maybach’s 1930s luxury leviathans, the new one will be made in a limited run of just 100. Which, given recent sales, could seem a little optimistic.
Regardless, Maybach has squeezed yet more power from the 6-litre twin-turbo V12, which now boasts an astonishing 640hp and 737lb ft of torque. A unique two-tone finish, ‘dark shadow’ 20-inch wheels and – naturally – a decadently luxurious cabin complete the package, a unique perfume atomiser included on the options list. The 62 Zeppelin is yours for 560,000 Euros.
