Yeti at large on Skoda stand

As the pendulum swings against big, extravagant SUVs Skoda’s Yeti could be well placed to pick up on the downsizing craze.
Seen in concept form at several shows since its debut in 2005, the Yeti has finally been confirmed as a production model.

On to a winner?

A 4x4 with a more environmentally and socially conscious outlook, the Yeti joins cars like the Toyota Urban Cruiser and Kia Soul by offering traditional SUV benefits like raised, kerb bashing ride height and improved visibility without the in-your-face attitude and implied devil may care attitude to climate change and the rest.

If the Yeti can deliver all this with typical Skoda good value it could well be on to a winner – it certainly looks the part. Elsewhere on the stand there’s further evidence of the brand’s no-nonsense, functional approach with the unveiling of the new GreenLine version of the Octavia.

Debuting the VW group’s new 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine, it offers 116g/km emissions in a full-sized family car and though the Octavia isn’t the most glamorous car at the show it could well be the most in tune with buyers’ needs in the current climate. With 105hp, the new engine is equipped with a particulate filter as standard.

There’s also the new Scout version of the Fabia, bringing a touch of off-road style. Whether you feel the Fabia benefits from a bit of colour coded plastic cladding is open to question but the new S2000 rally version also here suggests Skoda is poised to take full advantage of the new WRC rules.
