Paris: Chevrolet Volt and Camaro

After struggling to find its feet Chevrolet is on the attack here at Paris with some seriously exciting exhibits. Biggest news has to be the production version of the Volt electric car, just one of a number of important debuts.

Entirely powered by electric motors, the Volt also includes a petrol engine for on-the-fly charging after you’ve exhausted the 40-mile standalone range provided by the on-board batteries. GM has been working hard on bringing the Volt to production reality and, though it’s not quite there yet, it’ll be on sale by 2010.

The all-new Cruze – making its world debut here in Paris – will be here a lot sooner, going on sale in the UK next spring. Happy to describe itself as a ‘value brand’, the Cruze nonetheless aspires to greater things, with a sleek four-door silhouette likely to stand out in a hatchback dominated sector.

The styling is certainly striking, if not what you’d call beautiful. But with a sporty interior, complete with blue-lit dials (altogether now: ooooh!), and a choice of 1.6 and 1.8 petrol and 2.0 diesel engines the keenly priced Cruze stands a good chance of boosting Chevrolet’s near half a million European sales still further.

Joining the Cruze and Volt on the stand is a new concept called the Orlando. A sleek seven-seater MPV, Chevrolet says the Orlando is strictly a show concept, while in the same breath telling us it’ll go into production next year. We’ll see. Oh, and don’t miss the Camaro either – due in Europe in 2010.
