Paris Motor Show: world debut for Hyundai i20
From superminis to hybrid SUVs, Hyundai’s stand at Paris is buzzing with exciting new models. And if you were ever in any doubt the Koreans are a force to be reckoned with here’s the proof.
Biggest news is the world debut of the i20, bridging the gap between the i10 and i30 and giving Hyundai a very strong presence in the city car, supermini and small hatch sector. Designed in Germany and built on an all-new platform, the i20 has the potential to worry the traditional European mainstream.
Further evidence of Hyundai’s ambition comes with the i20 i-blue. Previewed here as a concept, it uses the firm’s new 1.4-litre diesel and boasts impressive outputs of 89bhp and 162lb ft of torque. Fitted with a six-speed gearbox in place of the standard car’s five-speeder it manages 99g/km and 68mpg – look out VW BlueMotion!
That’s not the only car flying the eco flag on the Hyundai stand either. We’ve also got a hybrid version of the Santa Fe SUV, again officially a concept but proof Hyundai is well up to speed with current trends. A 2.4-litre petrol engine with electric motor assistance means 148g/km and 44mpg, or so they claim.
There’s also a chance to see the rather less than eco-conscious ix55 SUV. OK, it won’t be coming to the UK but it’s certainly an impressive looking beast! Check out the Genesis and Genesis coupe too, both using Hyundai’s rear-wheel drive platform. The coupe in particular looks especially appealing – let’s hope it makes it to these shores!
