Paris Motor Show: VW unveils Golf GTi

'Concept' our derrière. Oh, wait, déjà vu. From the Volkswagen stand we bring you the new Golf GTI. And we mean it. Alongside the white three-door we’ve already seen, there’s a pair of identical five-door GTIs on display, too.

So we’re pretty sure this is exactly what the new GTI really will look like. Looks ace in that metallic blue, too – even if some of us aren’t yet entirely convinced by the slightly aftermarket looking styling. Still, this will be the fastest GTI ever don’t forget, with a 148mph top speed thanks to its new 208bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre engine.

This is actually the official show debut for cooking versions of the new regular Golf, here to show the also new Renault Megane what’s what, no doubt. Based on looks you’d have to say the Golf is a lot more conservative, only the Scirocco-style grille really letting on this is an all-new model. But we have already driven the Golf – and it’s brilliant.

Efficient, too. Indeed, with 119g/km CO2 and a combined mpg of 62.8, the new 108bhp version of the 2-litre diesel Golf equals the current BlueMotion model. Environmentalism waits for nobody, however, so Volkswagen is also showing a BlueMotion ‘concept’ (yes, that trick again) version of the new car.

With a new 1.6-litre diesel this is clamed to slash CO2 emissions to just 99g/km – the same as the current BlueMotion Polo. And if that’s still not green enough for you the Twin Drive hybrid version VW is working on will offer an even greener vision of Golf ownership.
Given VW has an enormous stand, no surprise to learn it’s showing off its entire model range. So Paris show goers can check out everything from the up-and-coming SCirocco, the Passat CC (one’s actually just arrived in our car park…), and the latest Phaeton – though the latter assumed they are into luxury travel.
