Paris Motor Show: green Mazda Kiyora concept
It’s Mazda’s turn to prove its green credentials and a new concept on its Paris stand does just that. Known as the Kiyora, it previews forthcoming efficiency improving technology like direct-injection petrol engines.
The Kiyora features just such an engine, further bolstered with the addition of stop-start and a turbo for extra power. Mazda recently announced its new Smart Idle Stop System (SISS) will be available from next year, promising a faster and smoother restart system than that offered by the likes of BMW.
The firm has also announced its intention to build a Toyota iQ-rivalling city car to slot in beneath the existing Mazda 2. You won’t be entirely bowled over in surprise to hear it’ll be known as the 1, the new model offering Smart-like sizing with 2+2 accommodation for added practicality.
Coming sooner is the facelifted MX-5, seen here for the first time and showing Mazda’s intention to boost its sporty credentials with a more aggressive new look based around the existing sport package. The engine range and mechanical bits remain pretty much unchanged though.
Other highlights include a new 2.2-litre diesel engine, boasting a hearty 182bhp and 295lb ft of torque – comfortably more than the most powerful versions of the VW group’s common-rail engine, BMW’s 2.0-litre diesel or Honda’s 2.2 i-DTEC. Due to feature in cars like the 6, it matches serious punch with latest generation particulate filters.
