Paris Motor Show: Volvo's new eco range

For a brand with such a traditionally right-on image it’s taken Volvo a while to seize the green initiative. But the new DRIVe range – debuted here at Paris – brings low CO2 cars to a wider audience than ever before.

OK, there’s nothing revolutionary in the approach, which basically follows the established mould of improving aerodynamics, fiddling with gear ratios and engine management and coming up with suitably eco friendly branding to stand out from the rest of the range. But Volvo has achieved some impressive results.

Impressive enough to trim emissions from 1.6 diesel variants of the C30, S40 and V50 to below 120g/km and boost economy to over 60mpg. Laudable enough on the coupe C30 but for proper family cars like the S40 and V50 this is a real boost, especially when you consider that qualifies them for £35 road tax.
