Essential questions to ask your caterer

Here are top ten questions to ensure you have a perfect wedding day feast.

1. Are you able to cater for specific dietary requirements?

Always check whether a caterer can offer a good quality vegetarian menu. If you know you have guests with nut allergies or other dietary requirements, you also need to check that your caterer can provide a suitable menu for them.

2. Have you catered at our chosen venue before?

This isn't an essential, but it's always useful if a caterer has worked at your reception venue before. They will have built up a good relationship with the venue, and will be familiar with the kitchen facilities. If they haven't worked at your venue before, make sure the caterer pays them a visit before the big day.

3. Do you offer the style of catering we like?

If you've got your heart set on a Thai menu, for example, be sure to find a caterer that specialises in that style of food.

4. Do you organise a tasting beforehand? Do you charge for this?

Many caterers will offer a tasting free of charge if you confirm your booking with them. Be sure to each try different dishes including a vegetarian option.

5. Will you provide a separate children’s menu?

If you're inviting children to your wedding, it's a good idea to provide a children's menu. As well as appealing to your younger guests, it's likely to be less expensive than the adult menu.

6. Can you also supply alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks? Do you offer a bar service?

If you're able to bring in your own drinks, be sure to get a costing from the caterer. They may have excellent relationships with wine suppliers and be able to offer some good deals. It's also one less thing for you to worry about!

7. What kitchen facilities do you require?

Bear in mind that your menu could be restricted by the kitchen facilities available at your chosen venue. Be sure to find out what the caterer needs.

8. Are you able to provide waiting staff?

Most caterers will provide waiting staff - essential whether you're having a buffet or silver-service menu. Be sure to ask how many staff they will bring, what uniforms they will wear and whether you need to pay for any refreshments.

9. Are you able to hire in tables, chairs, glassware etc if needed?

Chances are you might need to hire china, table linen and glassware. You might even need tables and chairs. See whether your caterer offers this service.

10. Do your prices include VAT and any service charges?

Always read the small print! Catering will be one of the biggest costs at your wedding, and you need to know whether the final quote includes service charge and VAT.
